NSW relationship register

Same-sex
couples who want to register their relationships can do so from
tomorrow, July 1. Gay and lesbian couples can register their
relationship with Births, Deaths and Marriages.
Persons will be required to sign a statutory declaration to be able to effect the registration, and that will then lead to a formal process which will include evidence of identity, age, eligibility and so forth being provided to the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages.
The parties must be in a committed exclusive relationship — they mustn’t be married or in another relationship that’s registered or registerable. They need to be over the age of 18 years and one person is required to be a resident of NSW.
From tomorrow couples will be able to obtain the required forms from the Office of Births, Deaths and Marriages or download them from their website.
Once all documentation has been accepted, there is a 28-day cooling-off period during which either partner can cancel the process. A registration fee of $144 — the same as that charged married couples — applies.

Bake-Off goodies raised over $30k
Local News, By Matt Akersten, 8th June, 2010
The Bobby Goldsmith Foundation says it looks to have raised between $30,000-$35,000 at Sunday’s annual Bake-Off auction.
There were fewer cakes on show than last year, but the turnout for the auction day and quality of the baking and icing was as outstanding as ever, many of the day’s attendees agreed.
Carlos Heng’s picnic-basket laden with a colourful collection of melting moments took out the coveted ‘Best in Show’ award along with the Best Fete Baking prize, while an extravagant Lady-Gaga inspired entry by Glen Lewis (Miss 3D) won Best Cake in the Professional category.
Drag diva Joyce Maynge’s sweet Carrot, Pecan and Thong Delight won Best Tasting Cake, while a ‘Sex in the City’-themed entry by Stefan Bear won Best Decorated Cake. A stunning Goodbye Mitzi Macintosh cake also impressed the judges and later sold for $1,500.
Evelyn Perusco’s Good Old-Fashioned Nutter won Best Tart, Susan Ougham’s Scotch Marmalade was judged the Best Preserve, and the Best Non-Edible Cake featured a winged and black bikini’ed icing Fallen Angel by Dean Morrison.

Bobby Goldsmith Bake-off

Gaycakes went along to one of the
big events of the Sydney Gay scene yesterday - the BGF Bake-off.
Based very much on a traditional fete baking competition but with
some added glamour, the event is a light hearted way of raising
funds for the Bobby Goldsmith Foundation. There is a huge range of
entries - some are joke entries and some are taken very seriously
but overall it is a very fun event.
The Bake Off judging panel, which comprised of executive chef of Longrain restaurants in Sydney and Melbourne Martin Boetz, Channel Ten’s Ready, Steady Cook presenter Peter Everett and iconic Sydney drag queen Claire de Lune, took each entry through a gruelling testing process based on taste, presentation and degree of difficulty.
After the prizes are awarded the cakes are auctioned off to raise funds. Our entry raised $1200. As our cake was a faux cake we included a $300 voucher for a real cake within the auction package presented together with a champagne package. We left before all the cakes were auctioned but they seemed to be well on their way to reaching their $45,000 target.

We created this cake for a big music
fan based on a variation on our shooting stars theme. Piano keys
surrounded the cake on 3 sides with the birthday message to the
front. This was quite a striking cake as it was large (75 dessert
portions) and as you can see all in black & white. Happy 40th
Sarah !

Need a Fake Cake ?
Fake cakes are a great way of
reducing costs or creating an impact for a reduced cost.
The SGLBA cake shown here was a fake cake. It was to be displayed in an area of heavy traffic in a bar and there for an extended period of time. So....we created a fake cake. It looked and cut exactly like the real thing and when the speeches were over we were able to bring out real slices of cake for everyone to taste. It was a time critical event and so we wouldn't have had time to slice and present the cake otherwise.

A wedding is a more relaxed affair and so using a fake cake isn't usually for time or presentation constraints.
A small wedding only really needs a small cake but adding a fake tier can increase the impact of the wedding cake dramatically. A plain design to a tier means that the cost would be the fraction of a real cake layer. Adding elaborate decoration may alter the savings that you make but it will always be cheaper than the real thing.
Need a fake cake for a photo-shoot or filming event or production? Let us know....if it gives us the right exposure then we can often work out a deal that suits everyone. If not then our prices are very reasonable !

New Flavour Testing
Gaycakes are about to embark on a testing phase to introduce some new flavours.
It's a pretty lengthy process as we test the cakes for flavour, texture, their ability to hold a design and finally their longevity.....we give a guarantee on how long our cakes will last once delivered so they also need to be able to stand up to that standard !
Current flavours being shortlisted are:
Almond & Praline
Banana
Vanilla
Hummingbird
Check back in a couple of weeks and we will let you know which ones made it through the assault course !

out there who genuinely want to be a part of that
celebration.

Buying a plain iced cake and adding your own flowers is often the most cost effective way of producing a wedding/commitment cake and are great for an event where cost in a big factor. We are often asked to provide plain iced cakes for the florist for the event to add a matching flower arrangement. Here are a few ideas to show how effective it can be, and to prove that we also do traditional cakes well too ; )
Take advice from your florist on which flowers continue to look great throughout the day.

Gaycakes has featured in a number
of places this week as the pictures from the Mardi Gras Dinner at
the Zoo event hits the press. It is very exciting to see one of
your creations appear in the papers that you read every week.
I spent the evening with the lovely Pam from ZenDiva Natural Soy & Palm Wax Candles. She made the most amazing themed candles as Bombonniere for the event. A beautiful black & white theme with kissing zebras. Whilst our cake "grabs the headlines" it is little touches like Pam's candles that added some real glamour to the tables...and unlike the cake which is long gone....I am still burning my candle and remembering the night each time I light it !
I am mentioning Pam as she put a great deal of effort into the event and showed herself to be a real supporter of the marriage equality cause (and pics of candles find it hard to compete with pictures of half naked bods at the Mardi Gras Party ; )

Here are some press snippets:

With its Gay Wedding theme the
Mardi Gras Dinner at the Zoo fundraising event for marriage
equality was great fun last night. Gaycakes was the proud sponsor
of the cake and we had a lot of fun (and sweat) making it and it
certainly seemed to please everyone who attended. Set around the
same-sex wedding of two Rhinos everyone seemed to have a different
favourite animal on the cake. Mine was the Lion !!!
Taronga Zoo with its city views of Sydney was such a fantastic venue. I certainly envy anyone who has an event at such a beautiful spot.
Here are a few snaps that I took...professional shots should follow shortly.

Who was that Gay Cake company at
Fair Day ???
We'll after what felt like months of preparation, Fair Day 2010 is over ! We had a very long and tiring day but it was so much fun and it was great to get some real face to face interaction with people on what we do. People wondered what made a gay cake, and then realised when they came into the stall. One little girl asked "why are they so good" to be told by her Mum "it's because they are gay darling". We had people taking pictures, bloggers preparing their entries, but most of all people just enjoying the fun of the cake designs. Lady Gaga was a big hit, as was the Pink Australia Flag. The Angel cake managed to survive the heat and her wings didn't melt in the sun. The 'Birds in Love' cakes drew people in as they loved seeing a cake in a cage.
Special thanks to Sue, Nora, Anthony and Trevor for coming along and helping both physically and mentally and for "salesman of the day' Andrew who I couldn't have done all this without his support.
See you in 2011. Competition winner to be announced on 31st March 2010.

Black & White still a popular cake trend for 2010 here in Sydney

Black and White cakes have remained popular if the start to 2010 is anything to go by. Any why not, they are classic in looks. This is an engagement cake but it could just as easily suit a wedding cake or tie in with a minimalist wedding theme. Just think back to all those fantastic Art Deco images and that scene in My Fair Lady where they are all dressed in black & white. Just beautiful design classics !

Unusually themed cupcakes aren't
seen a great deal on our travels but every now and then someone
brings you an idea that is so much fun that you can't wait to make
it.
These cupcakes were for three friends who have "nickname" roles for each other. One is the sperm, one is the egg and one is the oven. We loved making these and from the pics and email that we received after the event, the recipients had a great deal of fun too.

Not all events are big affairs.
Sometimes you just want a small celebration, without too much fuss,
but none the less a classy affair. We have recently discovered the
joy of www.pingg.com
here at Gaycakes and
it is a great way to add a bit of glamour to you event
invites....rather than those boring old texts or emails. High
quality invitation templates for birthdays, weddings,
anniversaries, christenings, valentines day etc. etc.
It is free, Facebook, Twitter, email and SMS friendly too. You can add pictures, website links, gift registries.....the list continues.
It will even chase up those people who don't RSVP automatically. What more could you want !
One downside, you need to pay US$5 to keep the invite ad free, but I guess if it does all of the above then that isn't bad.
Gaycakes is in no way affiliated to Pingg and receives no payment for having a link on this website. We just thought you might like it, as we do !
